KRYLOV Ivan Andreevich (1769, according to other sources 1766 or 1768–1844, St. Petersburg), fabulist, playwright, journalist, full member of the Russian Academy, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1841), honorary member of St. Petersburg University (1829), Councillor of State (1830). In 1782-94(?) and 1806-44 lived in St. Petersburg. From 1783 to 87 served in the State Chamber, in 1787-88 in the Mining Department, in 1808-10 in the Mint Department, in 1812-41 in the Imperial Public Library (presently the Russian National Library, 1 Ostrovskogo Square; memorial plaque). Krylov was an editor and the chief writer of the Pochta Dukhov magazine (1789), together with А. I. Klushin and others — of the Zritel (1792) journal, Sankt-Peterburgsky Merkury (1793) journal, later he was extensively published in St. Petersburg periodicals. Krylov was one of the organisers of the I. Krylov S Tovaryshchi printing-house and book store (1792-94, house of Betskoy, 1 Millionnaya Street; he also lived here from 1791-94). From 1811 he was a member of the Russian Language Friends Discussion Club, from 1817 that of the Free Society for the Friends of Philology, Science and Arts, honorary member of the Free Society for the Friends of Russian Language (1818), honorary associate of the Academy of Arts (from 1836). Krylov was a habitue of A. N. Olenin's, Ponomareva's soirees and some other. Krylov's comedies The Fashion Shop (1806); A Lesson to Daughters (1807) were continually staged in St. Petersburg theatres. Krylov's multifaceted literary talent found its most vivid manifestation in his fables (the first book of fables came out in St. Petersburg in 1809, the last nine volume edition of fables produced in his lifetime was printed in 1843). In 1838 Krylov's 70th birthday anniversary and 50th anniversary of his literary activities were celebrated, being the first literary jubilee celebration in Russia. In 1816-41 Krylov lived in one of the Public Library buildings (20 Sadovaya Street; memorial plaque), in 1841-44 in Blinov's house (8 First Line of Vasilievsky Island; memorial plaque). Buried at the Necropolis of Artists. There is a monument to Krylov in Summer Garden (1855, sculptor P. K. Klodt, high reliefs from the drawing by А. А. Agin). From 1923 a Lane bears Krylov's name (former Tolmazov Lane).
