IVANOV Vyacheslav Ivanovich (1866-1949), poet, playwright, philosopher. In 1884 graduated from a Moscow gymnasium and entered the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University, continued his studies in Berlin. He lived In St. Petersburg in 1905-13. Ivanov's flat at 35 Tavricheskaya Street (the tower) was a venue for the so-called Ivanov's Wednesdays - one of the most well-known literary-philosophic assemblies of the early 20th century St. Petersburg. Ivanov is the creator of an original version of Russian Symbolism, combining two main tendencies of the Silver Age Literature - the return of Russian culture to the spiritual foundations of Christianity and the new creative comprehension of the archetypes of Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The poetry of Ivanov embodies the combination of the antique abundant life and Christian cult of self-sacrifice and suffering. In poems devoted to St. Petersburg (On the Tower, Bronze Horseman, Sphinxes above the Neva) Ivanov gives the symbolical image of the city. In the late 1900s - early 1910s Ivanov initiated many discussions on Symbolism in Petersburg literary circles. In St. Petersburg - Petrograd the following works by Ivanov were published. Stars-Helmsmen (1903), Eros (1907), Cor ardens (1911), Love Secret (1912); a collection of articles on problems of culture and philosophy Following Stars (1909); the poem Infancy (1918); the book Correspondence from Two Corners (in collaboration with M.O. Gershenson, 1921). From 1913 he lived in Moscow; in 1920-24 lectured in Baku University, where in 1921 defended his thesis for a Doctor's degree. In 1924 together with his family he moved to Italy.
