APUKHTIN Alexey Nikolaevich (1840-1893, St. Petersburg), poet, prose writer. He graduated from The Law School (1859, schoolmate of P.I. Tchaikovsky), then he served in the Ministry of Justice (until 1862). He started writing in the 1850s, and became wide known after the publication of Verses collection (1886), which included 85 works (republished in 1891 and 1893). In the history of Russian culture Apukhtin is known as the author of verses, which were set to music of Tchaikovsky, S.V. Rakhmaninov, et al. (A Pair of Chestnuts, Mad Nights, Sleepless Nights..., To Forget So Soon..., Whether the Day Reigns..., and others), and became popular songs. Some verses were devoted to St. Petersburg (May in Petersburg, Petersburg Night, Unfinished Monument, and some other). In the 1860s he lived at 18 Karavannaya Street, from 1888 at 23 Kirochnaya Street, in the 1890s - at 26 Millionnaya Street. He was buried at Literatorskie Mostki.
