TRAM DEPOTS, enterprises providing special facilities and equipment for parking, maintenance and repair of tramway cars. The first Tram Depot (Petersburg Tram Depot, Petrograd Tram Depot as of 1914) was founded in 1907 on the territory of the Horse-Tram Depot (24/2 Bolshaya Posadskaya Street). In 1908 Tram Depots were built on Albaumnaya Street (today Krasutskogo Street) and 77 Sredny Avenue of Vasilievsky Island. In 1913 Rozhdestvensky Tram Depot was constructed (3 Degtyarny Lane), in 1915 Krestovsky Tram Depot (12 Barochnaya Street), and in 1917 Lanskoy Tram Depot (2g Serdobolskaya Street) were added. In 1916 Oranienbaumsky Tram Depot was put in operation (in Knyazhevo Village). In 1906-17 five traction substations were built. After October 1917 tramway facilities fell into decay, Lanskoy Tram Depot was closed down temporarily and was used for stationing malfunctioning cars (was reopened in 1926), Krestovsky Tram Depot was fit out for a hospital, etc. In 1922 — early 1930s some Tram Depots assumed the names of the Revolutionary movement participants: I.I. Konyashin (Tram Depot No.1, Moskovsky), A.P. Leonov (No.2, Vasileostrovsky), M.I. Kalinin (No.5, Lanskoy), A.K. Skorokhodov (No.6, Krestovsky) and others. In 1931 the first open-air Tram Depot was built on Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue (No.7, the present-day address is 3 Gribakinykh Street). The Tram Depots of Kirovsky District were launched in 1936-40 (No.8; the present-day address is 33 Marshala Govorova Street; No. 9, 114 Stachek Avenue). In the meantime (before the first trolleybus depot was put into operation) the parking and repair of trolleybuses was done at Smirnov Tram Depot (No.4). In 1940 the Leonov Tram Depot housed the 2nd car-repair plant. During the Siege of 1941-44 the production of armament was arranged in the repair facilities of some Tram Depots. After the war new Tram Depots no longer appeared. In 1958-92 the former 2nd car-repair plant was replaced with a non-standard equipment workshop on the territory of Leonov Tram Depot (today Tram Depot No.2). Since the early 1990s through 2003 the fleet of Tram Depots reduced from 2145 to 1548 cars. In 2003 Tram Depot No.4 was closed (the former Smirnov Tram Depot, 3 Degtyarny Lane). Since 1991 the Tram Depots have been controlled by Gorelektrotrans State Enterprise. By 2003 the tramway facilities of St. Petersburg were comprised of 9 Tram Depots with the rated capacity of 1760 cars, including a combined tram and trolleybus depot (131 Grazhdansky Avenue), a combined passenger-freight Tram Depot (the former Konyashin Tram Depot, 83 Moskovsky Avenue). Gorelektrotrans traffic service must also be mentioned (46 Korablestroiteley Street). There are 88 traction substations, the length of the electricity supply lines exceeds 700 km.
