Kokoshkin S.A. (1795-1861), Chief Policeman

KOKOSHKIN Sergey Alexandrovich (1795 or 1796-1861, St. Petersburg), statesman, Infantry General (1856). From 1811, he served in the Preobrazhensky Guard Regiment and from 1828 he was an assistant to the chief of staff of military settlements. In 1830-47 Kokoshkin served as St. Petersburg Chief Policeman. Despite various accusations of bribery, he was a favourite of Emperor Nicholas I. In 1847-56, he served as Governor General of Chernigov, Poltava and Kharkov. In 1856 he was elected a senator. He owned 3 houses in St. Petersburg: 12 Voskresensky Avenue (today Chernyshevskogo Avenue), 7 Gagarinskaya Street; 22 Palace embankment. He was buried in the church dedicated to Our Lady of Tikhvin in the village of Anninskoe in the outskirts of St. Petersburg.
