Kavelin A.A. governor-general in 1842-46

KAVELIN Alexander Alexandrovich (1793-1850, Gatchina), statesman and combat leader, infantry general (1843). He was educated in Page Corps School in St. Petersburg. Since 1810 had been in the military service, participated in the Russo-French (1812-14) and Russo-Turkish (1828-29) wars. In 1818-25, the aide-de-camp of Grand Prince Nikolay Pavlovich (emperor-to-be Nicholas I). In 1830-34 the head master of Page Corps school, in 1834-41 the mentor of tsesarevich Alexander Nikolaevich (emperor-to-be Alexander II). In 1842-46 the governor-general in St. Petersburg. During his government, the construction of Mariinsky Palace was completed (1844), the construction of Moskovsky Railway Station started (1844) in St. Petersburg. Since 1842, a member of State council. He owned a house on 38 Voznsensky Avenue. Kavelin was buried in Troitse-Serghieva Hermitage (the tomb not preserved).
