BARANOV Nikolay Mikhailovich (1837-1901), statesman, Lieutenant General (1893). Baranov graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg (1856). From 1856, he served in the Navy, in 1866-77, he headed the Naval Museum. Baranov participated in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-78 (appointed an aide-de-camp for his achievements). After the assassination of Emperor Alexander II in March - August 1881 he served as Chief of City Administration in St. Petersburg, organizing a fight against terror of People's Will brigade. Baranov tried to engage officials and intelligentsia in cooperation with police, he arranged gatherings of house-owners and flat lessees to discuss questions of city life. In 1882-97, he was governor of Nizhny Novgorod, from 1897, Baranov was a senator. In St. Petersburg he lived in 25 Znamenskaya Street (today Vosstaniya Street). He died abroad, and was buried in Novodevichye Cemetery in St. Petersburg.
