BLOCK SUPERVISORS, ranks of executive police who headed police blocks in 1782–1867; they were appointed by the Board of Decency and were subordinated to private police officers. "City supervisors" (night supervisors, see Booth Guards) were under the jurisdiction of block supervisors. A block supervisor had an assistant – block lieutenant who was elected for 3 years by the residents of the block. In 1867 blocks were replaced with police stations, and block supervisors were replaced with station police officers.
