Pavlovsky District

Categories / City Topography/Historical Geography/City Districts (2003)

PAVLOVSKY DISTRICT, an administrative and territorial unit of St. Petersburg, with its administration located in the town of Pushkin, at 24 Oktyabrsky Boulevard. It owes its name to the town of Pavlovsk at the district's centre. Formed in 1998, the district stretches along the southern boundary of St. Petersburg, 30 kilometres away from the city centre. It abuts the Pushkinsky District on the north, and borders the Gatchinsky and Tosnensky Districts of Leningrad Region on the south, encompassing a number of historic sites and municipalities such as the town of Pavlovsk, the Tyarlevo Settlement, Dinamo, the VIR Base, Popovo, Gambolovo, Pyazelevo, Grachevka, Krasnaya Slavyanka, and the Moskovskoe Shosse Settlement. The Slavyanka River, as well as the Tyzva and Popovka streams, all cross the area. The 40 km2 territory is predominantly occupied by green plantations and agricultural lands. With a population of 23.400 inhabitants as of 2003, it is considered St. Petersburg's least populated district. The district contains two municipal units, including the town of Pavlovsk and the Tyarlevo Settlement. The district's first development came in the second half of the 18th century, when Empress Catherine II ordered a summer residence which she gifted to her son, Grand Prince Pavel Petrovich (future Emperor Paul I), in 1777. Great significance is attributed to the construction of Russia's first railway leading from Pavlovsk, which was completed in 1837. The territory is intersected by a railway line starting form the Vitebsky Railway Station and running to Oredezh, passing through the Pavlovsk station. The district's main thoroughfares include the Pushkin - Yam-Izhora, the Pavlovsk - Voyskorovo, and the Pavlovsk - Kommunar highways. The territory also accommodates a small-wares factory, the "Dinamo" sports equipment factory, the Experimental Station of the All-Russian Crop Science Institute, the Leningrad Horticultural Experimental Station, the Nevskoe Pedigree Farm, the Scientific Genetic Research Institute of Livestock Breeding, and several children's organisations. The world famous Pavlovsk Palace and Park also attracts many tourists.
