Lomonosovsky District

Categories / City Topography/Historical Geography/City Districts (2003)

LOMONOSOVSKY DISTRICT, an administrative and territorial unit of St. Petersburg, with its administration located in the town of Lomonosov, at 42 Dvortsovy Avenue. The district owes its name to the town of Lomonosov at the center of the cognominal district within the Leningrad Region. Formed in 1978, the Lomonosovsky District is located in the western part of St. Petersburg, on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. It borders the Petrodvortsovy District on the east, and the Lomonosovsky District of the Leningrad Region on the west and south. The district encompasses historic sites and municipalities such as the town of Lomonosov, Martyshkino settlement, Olgin Kanal, Kronstadtsaya Kolonia, Krasnaya Sloboda, and Oranienbaumskaya Kolonia. As of 2003, a population of 40.200 people live on a territory of 45,4 square-km. The district contains one municipal unit, the town of Lomonosov. Development of the Lomonosovsky District began over the course of the Northern War of 1700-21, with the Oranienbaum park and garden area emerging in the 1710s. The Lomonosovsky District is the only suburb of Leningrad which was not occupied by the German Army during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 (see Oranienbaumsky Springboard). In the 1960-80s, the district saw intensive residential development. The territory is intersected by a railway line running in the direction of Sosnovy Bor through the Martyshkino, Oranienbaum, Oranienbaum-2, Kronstadtskaya Kolonia and Bronka stations. Bronka marks the boundary where defensive fortifications were constructed. The Lomonosovsky Harbour serves steamers cruising through the centre of St. Petersburg and a ferry to Kronstadt. The St. Petersburg - Sosnovy Bor Highway, also known as Lomonosovskoe Highway within district boundaries, is the district's main thruway and the infrastructural centre of its development; other thruways are Morskaya Street, Dvortsovy Avenue, and Krasnoflotskoe Highway. The district is home to approximately 20 industrial complexes, including the Parus Carton and Paper Factory, the Lomonosovsky Car Repair Plant, and Military Diving Equipment Plant No 28. The Lomonosov Port International Trade Port and Open Joint-stock Company, which since 1993 has executed the financial operation of the Lomonosov Navy Base berths, plays an important role in the district's economy. The district is famous for the Oraninebaum State Reserve Museum Palace and Park. See the map on p. 476.
