PRIMORSKY DISTRICT, an administrative and territorial unit of St. Petersburg, with its administration located at 83 Savushkina Street. Formed in 1936, known as Zhdanovsky District in 1949-89, and existing in its present day boundaries since 1973. In 1973, the district's Neva Delta Island was annexed to the territory of the Petrogradsky District, and the Primorsky District was expanded to the North and Northwest, absorbing the former settlements of Lakhta, Olgino, Lisy Nos and others. The name originates from its geographical location. Situated in northwest St. Petersburg, it neighbours the Vyborgsky District on the East and the Kurortny District on the West. The southern border runs along the Bolshaya Nevka River. The territory covers an area of 89.1 km2. It also encompasses a number of large bodies of water, including Lake Lakhtinsky, Shuvalovsky Pit and Orlovsky Pit, as well as the Chernaya Rechka River and Yuntolovka River, the Yuntolovskaya Lesnaya Dacha nature reserve, and the Novoorlovsky Forest Park. As of 2003, the population count was 377,400 people. The district is comprised of eight municipal units, including Municipal Districts Nos 65, 66, 68, 70, Commandant's Aerodrome, Yuntolovo, Lakhta-Olgino, and Lisy Nos. The district also encompasses historical localities and urban areas, such as Kolomyagi, Novaya Derevnya, Staraya Derevnya, Chernaya Rechka, Commandant's Aerodrome, Lake Dolgoe, Severo-Primorskaya part, and the former settlements of Kamenka, Olgino, Lakhta, and Lisy Nos. In the 17th century, there were a number of settlements on the district territory, such as the Finnish village Kolomyaki. In the 18th - 19th centuries, Lakhta, Olgino, Staraya Derevnya and Novaya Derevnya belonged to eminent noblemen, including Count G. G. Orlov, Chancellor А. P. Bestuzhev-Ryumin, and in the second half of the 19th century it became a much liked public resort. At the turn of the 20th century, an aerodrome was built in the vicinity of Komendanskaya Dacha. The district began to be residentially developed in the early 1970s, which has continued through the 20th into the early 21st century, with the most intense development happening around Lake Dolgoe, Kamenka, and as well as earth dams on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. Three metro stations serve the district, including Chernaya Rechka, Pionerskaya, and Staraya Derevnya. There are six stations running along the Sestroretsk line towards the Finlyandsky Railway Station, including Novaya Derevnya, Staraya Derevnya, Yakhtennaya, Lakhta, Olgino and Lisy Nos. The district's major thoroughfares include Bogatyrsky Avenue, Ispytateley Avenue, Komendantsky Avenue and Planernaya Street, as well as Primorsky Avenue and Primorskoe Highway, which run to the resort area on the coast of the Gulf of Finland along the Scandinavian route. The industrial sector is represented by the Severny Plant, the Abrasive Plant and the Metrobeton Plant. The district is served by the Detskaya Railway. Quality accommodation is provided by the Olgino Camping Motel along the Primorskoe Highway. The coast of the Gulf of Finland accommodates the Saint-Petersburg 300-Anniversary Park. Architectural and historical landmarks include the Holy Annunciation Church in Staraya Derevnya, Buddhist Temple, the location of the duel in which Alexander Pushkin was killed, and a memorial complex called the Serafimovskoe Cemetery.
