TSERETELI Irakly Georgievich (1881-1959), statesman, public and political figure. After graduating from Tiflis Gymnasium (1900) he entered the School of Law of Moscow University, in 1902, he was arrested and deported on the account of his participation in the student movement. From that time on, he was a socialist-democrat and Menshevik. Tsereteli was a deputy of the 2nd State Duma (1907), a leader of its socialist-democratic faction. He was subjected to exile and penal servitude in Siberia in 1907. After the February Revolution of 1917, he came back to Petrograd where he became one of Menshevik leaders, as well as member of the Executive Committee of the Petrograd Soviet and Vice-Chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee. In May-July 1917 he acted as Postmaster General for the Provisional Government and in July was appointed acting managing director of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. After October 1917, he was one of the founders of Constituent Assembly Advocacy Union, and took part in the work of the clandestine Minor Committee of Ministers, as well as in illegal sittings of the First All-Russian Central Executive Committee. He also tried to consolidate the Leftist movement for struggle against the Bolshevist regime. He was a deputy of the Constituent Assembly, after the dispersal of the Assembly he left for Georgia. Tsereteli was one of the founders and leaders of the Georgian Democratic Republic, and also its representative abroad. He lived in emigration since 1921. Tsereteli wrote Memoirs of the February Revolution (V. 1-2, Paris, 1963).
