BLAGOEV'S GROUP (the Party of Russian Social Democrats from 1884, the Petersburg Group of the Party of Russian Social Democrats from 1885), one of the first social-democratic groups in Russia. It was founded by D. Blagoev, N.P. Andreev, G.N. Lavrov, L.A. Latyshev, V.G. Kharitonov, and other (up to 30) students in 1883. The group members organized about 15 circles of 8 to 10 members each, mutual benefit societies, a central library, and a number of mobile district libraries. They distributed educational and revolutionary literature and published two issues of the illegal Rabochy (The Working Man) printed underground in Kharitonov's apartment at 21 Ropshinskaya Street. The group dissolved after its leaders were arrested in 1885-87.
