Nochlezhka (Shelter), a charitable foundation

NOCHLEZHKA (Shelter) (building No.27 Apraksin Dvor), a charitable foundation initiated in 1990 for making and development of the system for support of the homeless. Nochlezhka provides clothes and other personal articles, legal and medical assistance to people deprived of lodging, assists with their job placement, initiates legislation for the protection of rights of the homeless. The organisation disposes of a shelter accommodation for 70 people (since 1995). It also publishes Na Dne (The Lower Depths) newspaper (since 1994). V.A. Sokolov has been the president of the foundation since its establishment. In 1998 the Joint Council of Europe and the USA nominated the foundation for For the Development of Democracy and Civil Society Award.
