TUKHACHEVSKY Mikhail Nikolaevich (1893-1937), Soviet military commander, Marshal of the Soviet Union (1935). Tukhachevsky graduated from the 1st Moskovsky Cadet School (1911), and Alexandrovsky Military School (1914). In the ranks of the Semenovsky Life Guards Regiment took part in WW I, in 1915 was taken prisoner, returned to Russia in October 1917, soon whereupon joined the Russian Communist (Bolshevik) Party and the Red Army. During the Civil War held command of a number of armies and fronts. In March 1921 commanded the 7th Army, which quelled the Kronstadt Insurrection of 1921, in April - July 1921 commanded troops in the Tambov Province during the suppression of the peasant uprising; extensively employed asphyxiant gases, mass executions of prisoners, hostages and civilians, the "scorched-earth" tactics. In 1924-25 was appointed Deputy Chief; in 1925-28 Chief of General Staff; in 1928-31 served as commander of the Leningrad Military District, in 1931-36 was Deputy to the People's Commissar of Defence. In 1937 was arrested on false charges, convicted sentenced to the death penalty and executed by shooting. A street was named after Tukhachevsky (Marshala Tukhachevskogo Street). A memorial plaque is placed on the house, where Tukhachevsky lived from 1928-31 (19 Millionnaya Street).
