CHICHAGOV Vasily Yakovlevich (1728-1809, St. Petersburg), Admiral. Graduated from the School of Mathematics and Navigational Sciences (1742), completed an internship in the British Navy, from 1745 served in the Baltic Fleet. In 1765-66 led the expedition, organised by M.V. Lomonosov, in the North Sea, set out to find a passage from Arkhangelsk to Kamchatka. In 1770-72 trained Baltic Fleet crews, was in command of the Reval Port, later Kronstadt Port. From 1775, Chichagov was a member of the Admiralty Collegium. During the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-90, following the death of S.K. Greigh, took up the command of the Baltic Fleet, co-ordinated its operations in the naval battles near the Island of Aland (1789), Reval and Vyborg (both in 1790). For distinguished performance in the latter was the first navyman to be awarded the St. George Order of the First Degree. In 1797 by a decree of Emperor Pavel I was discharged and banned from visiting the capital (after the accession of emperor Alexander I this restriction was abolished). Buried at Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (Monastery).
