SKLYAEV Fedosey Moiseevich (1672-1728, St. Petersburg), shipbuilder, shipwright (1707), captain commander (1723). Sklyaev learned shipbuilding at Amsterdam's wharfs in 1697, in England in 1698, and in Venice in 1699. Working at shipyards of Lodeinoe Pole and Shlisselburg in 1704, he moved to the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg in 1705. Sklyaev organised frigate-building at Solombalskaya Shipyard in Arkhangelsk in 1708. A company commander in the Battle of Poltava in 1709, he was Captain of Munker snow with Peter the Great aboard when taking part in the Vyborg campaign in 1710. Sklyaev was thereafter a construction manager at Izhorskaya Shipyard where scampavias were built. It was Sklyaev who built Poltava, the first battleship, laid down at the Admiralty Shipyard, and who developed, together with Peter the Great, the design of the 110-gun Peter I and Peter II. He was also a designer of rowing and sailing boats such as brigantines and scampavias. One of the first ship-raising professionals in the Russian Navy, he was in charge of raising the 50-gun Pernov in 1710 and the 90-gun Lesnoe in 1719, which sank near Kotlin Island. He was also the first collector of drawings and models; the Naval Museum was founded on the basis of his collection. Sklyaev built a total of 8 battleships, 2 frigates, 2 snows, 4 prams, a yacht, over 200 galleys and other vessels. He owned a house in St. Petersburg (today, the territory at 30 Dvortsovaya Embankment). Buried at Alexander Nevsky Monastery.
