GREIGH Samuil Karlovich (Samuel) (1735-1788), naval commander, Admiral (1782), honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1783). A Scot, from 1764 served in the Russian army with the rank of captain. In 1764-68, was in command of different ships of the Baltic Fleet. In the course of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-74 held command of a ship squadron of Admiral A.G. Sviridov's Archipelago Expedition, delivered heroic performance in the naval battles in the Hios Channel and Chesmen Harbour (both in 1770). In May of 1775 aboard Isidor ship conveyed Princess Tarakanova to St. Petersburg. From 10 August 1775 appointed Commander of the Kronstadt Port, supervised the re-construction of the docks, port, canals in Kronstadt, the building of the naval hospital. In 1777-78, was commander of a fleet division. In the 1760s-70s developed principles for a new way of arming and equipping sailing ships (adopted in 1777), a number of battleships was built on the basis of his projects. In the 1780s on Greigh's initiative fitting ships with carronades began (large-caliber guns, intended for close range usage), their inventor K.K. Gaskoyn was invited to Russia. In 1785 Greigh guided the transfer of the Admiralty from St. Petersburg to Kronstadt. During the Russo-Swedish war of 1788-90, holding command of the Baltic Fleet, he won a victory in the Gogland Naval Battle (1788). Died on board of the Rostislav ship.
