REGIMENT SETTLEMENTS are places for compact billets of guard regiments inside the city limits in the 18th - early 19th century. They were built in 1739-43 under regular designs specially provided for this purpose (usually the planning included an Avenue with crossing streets named according to numbers of companies quartered in the streets.) Settlements included wooden houses (so called "liasons") for enlisted men (lodged in 2-4 families or 4-12 soldiers in each house), officers' houses, a regimental unit (headquarters), a church, a field hospital, an armoury (arsenal), stables, a bathhouse, and operational units (totally 170-250 buildings) and the grounds - pastures, vegetable gardens, et al. The settlement of Preobrazhensky Life Guards regiment was located between present-day Liteiny Avenue, Zhukovskogo Street, Suvorovsky Avenue and Kirochnaya Street (the street planning is partially preserved between Radishcheva Street and Mayakovskogo Street.); the settlement of Semyonovsky Life Guards Regiment was built between the Obvodny Canal, Moskovsky and Zagorodny Avenues and Vitebsky Railway Line (the street planning is preserved). Its grounds reached present-day Sotsialisticheskaya Street and to the south up to the villages of Shushary and Srednaya Rogatka; the settlement of Izamilovsky Life Guards Regiment was located between the Fontanka River, Potemkinskaya Street, the Neva River and Liteiny Avenue (the district of present-day Krasnoarmeyskaya streets); and the settlement of Kavalergardsky Regiment was located between Kirochnaya and Potemkinskaya streets, the Neva River and Liteiny Avenue (the street planning is preserved) and Shpalernaya Street and the Neva River (up to the Smolny Monastery). The settlements were vacated in the beginning of the 19th century due to the construction of barracks, but the grounds were for the most part kept by regiments and sold by them for construction or leasing.
