CAVALRY LIFE GUARDS REGIMENT, cavalry guard regiment, formed in 1730 as Cavalry Guards out of the Kronschlott Dragoon Regiment, whose history dates back to 1706. From the 1780s, known as Cavalry Life Guards Regiment. Regiment's sub-divisions participated in the wars with Turkey in 1735-39, Sweden in 1741-43; the entire regiment took part in the wars with France in 1805, 1806-07, 1812-14, in quelling of the Polish Insurrection of 1830-31, in WW I of 1914-18. The regiment enjoyed the reputation of one of the most aristocratic and magnificent guards units, commander and patron functions rested with emperors. From 1733 it was stationed in the Regiments Settlement (sloboda), between the Liteiny Avenue, Kirochnaya Street and Smolny Monastery, at the end of the 18th century transferred to the area between the St. Isaac's Square, the Moika River and Konnogvardeysky Boulevard, permanently making up a regimental complex, which included barracks (1805-07, re-built in 1844-47; now 4 Konnogvardeysky Boulevard; 2 Konnogvardeysky Lane; 1 Podbelsky Lane; 3 Yakubovich Street), Manege (1 St. Isaac's Square), stables and other buildings. The regiment's chapel was the Holy Annunciation Church (which has not survived). In the course of the Civil War 1918-21, 57 officers and 1,275 soldiers, serving in the regiment up to 1917, fought on the side of the White Army. In 1918 in Petrograd the regiment, consisting of 49 soldiers and two officers, became the basis of the 1st Cavalry Regiment of the Red Army. References: Анненков И. В.
