MARIA FEDOROVNA (1847-1928), Empress (since 1881). Nee Marie Sophie Frederikke Dagmar, Princess of Denmark. Wife of Emperor Alexander III (from 1866); originally engaged to his elder brother, Tsesarevitch Nicholas Alexandrovich (1843-1865). She patronized the Russian Society of the Red Cross, Empress Maria"s Department of Institutions, the House of Education, the Alexandrovsky Lyceum, and many other institutions (over 120). During Emperor Nicholas II"s reign, she participated in civil and social affairs in the capacity of the widowed Empress, possessing her own court, which played an important role in St. Petersburg"s high life. She lived in the Anichkov Palace. She left the capital at the beginning of the First World War (1914-18). In 1919, she emigrated permanently to Denmark.
