STOLYPIN Peter Arkadievich (1862-1911), statesman, chamberlain (1906). Graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Petersburg University (1885). In 1884-89, he served St Petersburg's Department of Internal Affairs. In 1889-99, he was Marshal of the Nobility of the Kovensky District, called the Kovenskaya Province in 1899-1902; Governor of Grodno in 1902-03; Governor of Saratov in 1903-06. From 1906-11, he was Minister of Internal Affairs and Chairman of the Council of Ministers; from 1907, he was a concurrent member of the State Assembly. He supervised the development and enforcement of agrarian reforms, and a number of economic and social reforms. Owned a house in St Petersburg (5 Gagarinskaya Street). On 12 August 1906, military members of the Union of Socialists Revolutionary Maximalists blew up Stolypin's summer residence on Aptekarsky Island (the terrorists and numerous visitors perished; Stolypin was not hurt); Emperor Nicholas II then suggested that Stolypin and his family settle in the Winter Palace, and, in spring of 1907, he moved into the Elagin Palace. In memory of the attack, an obelisk was placed on Aptekarskaya Embankment at the Botanical Garden in 1908 (architect R. F. Marfeld, partially preserved). On 1 September 1911, Stolypin was fatally wounded by socialist-revolutionary D. G. Bogrov at the Kiev City Theatre. He was buried in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (the grave was destroyed in the 1960s, now restored). In 2003, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the former Police Department building, where Stolypin lived for a period of time (16 Fontanka River Embankment).
