Georgy Mikhailovich, Grand Prince (1863-1919)

GEORGY MIKHAILOVICH (1863-1919, Petrograd), Grand Prince, General Lieutenant (1909). Son of the Grand Prince Mikhail Nikolaevich. Served in the Uhlan Life Guard Regiment until 1903. From 1895 until March 1917, he directed the Russian Museum and presented a large collection of coins (lost after October 1917). He organized the publication of a collection of Russian coins from the late 18th-19th centuries. Head of the Russian Genealogical Society (from 1898). Arrested in Finland in April 1918 and sent to Vologda; in August of the same year he was arrested and delivered to Petrograd. He was shot at the Peter and Paul Fortress according to a decision by the Petrograd Extraordinary Committee (Cheka) as called for by the "Red Terror". His burial place is unknown. In 1981, he was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.
