THE SYMBOLS OF ST. PETERSBURG, works of art associated with St. Petersburg in the mass consciousness. The best known visual symbols include the weathercocks on the steeples of the SS. Peter&Paul Cathedral (an angel), the Chief Admiralty (a ship), The Bronze Horseman, and the opening of the Palace Bridge; literary symbols are embodied in the works of Alexander Pushkin, F.M. Dostoevsky and Alexander Blok; among musical symbols is Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, and V.P. Solovyev-Sedoy's song Gorod Nad Volnoy Nevoy (City over the Free Neva).
