Pesochnaya Embankment

PESOCHNAYA EMBANKMENT situated on Aptekarsky Island between Kamennoostrovsky Avenue and Karpovka River Embankment. It was laid on the left bank of the Malaya Nevka River in 1820s and named Pesochnaya Embankment (Sand Embankment) because of the sandy surface. The nobility built their dachas and mansions on the embankment from the early 19th century including the Guryev Counts, Laval Counts, Zakrevsky Counts, and Shakhovsky Princes. Standing out among other buildings is house 10 built by architect N. E. Lansere in 1913, house 22 built by architect I. K. Stender in 1914, and house 24 designed and owned by architect L. A. Ilyin in 1911-13 and bought by Grand Prince Dmitry Konstantinovich in 1914, the front house restored in 1990s. The House of Artists was built by architect A. I. Lapirov at number 16 in 1961; sculptor M. K. Anikushin's workshop by architect F. A. Gepner at number 12 in 1968; Palace of Youth by architects P. S. Prokhorov, V. V. Lukyanov, and A. P. Izoitko at number 26 in 1968-76, and Weather Information Centre in 1970s. The embankment was reconstructed in 1966.
