Chernyshevskogo Avenue

CHERNYSHEVSKOGO AVENUE, called Voskresensky Avenue until 1923, from Robespierre Embankment to Kirochnaya Street. The avenue was renamed in commemoration of N.G. Chernyshevsky. The avenue, laid out in the second half of the 18th century, owes its original name to the Holy Resurrection Church situated behind Liteiny Court; in 1817-18 the Our Lady’s Church of Joy for All Who Sorrow was erected on the site of the previous church (house No. 3). In the early 19th century, a two-storied residential building with an attic was built here (house No. 5), while house No. 17 was constructed in the mid-19th century (architect N.P. Grebenka). Among the buildings built at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries are: house No. 1 (1887-89, architect N.V. Dmitriev), house No. 2 (1896, architect B.I. Segen), house No. 7 (1877-79, architect R.A. Gedike), house No. 15 (1869, architect T.B. Tsinke). House No. 13 is remarkable as the place where publicist N.V. Shelgunov lived and died. Chernyshevskogo Avenue also accommodates a bread factory (house No. 16) and Chernyshevskaya Metro Station.
