It lies between Dobrolyubova Avenue and Karpovka River Embankment. The avenue was laid in 1730s as a road through settlements of Yamburgsky Regiment, Koporsky Regiment, St. Petersburg Regiment, and Belozersky Regiment (hence the former names translated as Main Harrison Road and Main Officer Road). The first stretch was built as far as Zverinskaya Street in 1830s and the last one from Kamennoostrovsky Avenue in 1909-10. Tuchkov Buyan Complex was erected at 1a Bolshoy Avenue in 1763-72. It accommodated a vocational technical school from 1950s. Demolished in the 1990s, the building was restored as a hotel in 2003. Most buildings were constructed between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Among them is house 44 built by architect I. A. Pretro in 1906-07; house 75 built by architect K. I. Rosenstein in 1913-15 with facades by A. E. Belogrud; house 79 built by architect S. S. Korvin-Krukovsky in 1910; and house 102 built by architect E. I. Gonkiewicz in 1912-15 with facades by architect Belogrud. The avenue is full with business offices, banks, stores, small theatres, and cinemas. Horse trams started running through the avenue in 1860. Trams operated from 1908 and trolleybuses from 1947. In the post-war period, house 27 was built by architect Y. N. Lukin, house 32-36 by architects A. I. Knyazev and V. M. Fromzel, and house 67 by architect K. A. Gerber. V. I. Lenin's bust was placed in 1957 and a monument to N. A. Dobrolyubov was erected in 1959. Among avenue residents were sinologist V. M. Alexeev who lived in house 1 in 1913-25, philologist and Slavicist M. R. Vasmer who lived in house 4 in 1910s, and artist A. I. Savinov and poet N. S. Tikhomirov who lived in house 5 in 1922-42. Poet A. A. Blok studied in Vvedenskaya Gymnasium in 1891-96. Y. A. Gagarin, who later became the first man in space, had practical training at the vocational technical school that was situated in the same building in 1955. Microbiologist and Member of the Academy V.
