Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island

BOLSHOY AVENUE OF VASILIEVSKY ISLAND, in 1720s-1780s - Bolshaya Prospektivaya or Bolshaya Pershpektivaya Street, in 1918-22 - F. Adlera Avenue, in 1922-44 - Proletarskoy Pobedy Avenue. The avenue runs from the First Line of Vasilievsky Island to Morskoy Slavy Square. It was laid in the 1710s. Canals that were provided for in Vasilievsky Island development projects were not built. Gardens that appeared instead were officially allowed in 1809. They were reconstructed as boulevard lanes by architects I. A. Fomin, L. A. Ilyin, and V. V. Danilov in 1922-32. Among architectural monuments are house 1, which accommodates St. Catherine’s Lutheran Church; house 8 built by architect G. R. Zollikofer in 1840-41; house 10 built by architect R. A. Gedike in 1854; house 11/23 accommodating St. Andrew"s Cathedral; house 18 built in 1789-90 to accommodate Andreevsky Market (today, Vasileostrovsky Market); house 28 built by architect A. Porto in 1808-10 to accommodate the Academic Printing Office since 1825; house 49-51 now accommodating the Maternity Hospital built by architect K. K. Schmidt in 1897-99; house 50 built by architect Vladimir A. Kosyakov in 1910-11; house 55 with an eastern building erected by architect I. S. Kitner in 1885-86 and a western building erected by architect A. R. Havemann, which formerly accommodated the German Lutheran School attached to St. Catherine"s Church and now houses the Administration of Vasileostrovsky District; house 65 built by architect A. E. Shtaubert in 1818-20 that formerly accommodated a hospital of Finlyandsky Lifeguard Regiment; house 68 - Vasileostrovskaya Commercial Kitchen built by architects A. K. Barutchev, I. A. Gilter, I. A. Meerzon, and Y. O. Rubanchik in 1930-31 and reconstructed in 2000; house 71-73 built by architect V. G. Shalamov in 1882-84 that formerly accommodated the Police House and Fire Station; house 82 built by architect M. F. Eremeev in 1902-03; house 83 - Kirov Palace of Culture built by architects N. A. Troitsky and S. N. Kozak in 1930-37; and house 100 built by architects Vasily A. Kosyakov and D. K. Prussak in 1888 -98 to accommodate the Church of Our Lady the Merciful. Morskoy Harbour Station was erected on the gulf coast at 1 Morskoy Slavy Square in 1973-83. Among avenue residents were Romance literature scholar V. F. Shishmarev who lived in house 1 in 1927-48, soil scientist V. V. Dokuchaev in house 2 in 1892-98, writer F. M. Dostoevsky in house 4 in 1840s, mathematician M. V. Ostrogradsky in house 8 in 1840s, navigator F. P. Litke in place of present-day house 13 in 1800s, Latvian folklorist K. Barons in house 15 in 1860s, critic D. I. Pisarev in house 22 in 1860-62, historian N. I. Kareev and artist G. S. Vereysky in house 24 in 1913-32 and 1915-62, respectively, mechanic A. K. Nartov in a wooden house in place of present-day house 37 in 1716-56, electrician M. A. Chatelaine in house 37 in 1890s, composer A. N. Serov in house 40 in 1865-71, artist Valentin A. Serov in house 40 in 1865-71, mineralogist V. M. Severgin in place of present-day house 55 in 1798-1826, geologist Y. A. Bilibin in house 56 in 1925-49, artist N. K. Roerich in house 57 between 1880s and 1902, and party worker P. I. Smorodin in house 57 in 1929-33. Composer V. P. Solovyev-Sedoy used to visit house 65. V. I. Lenin made his speeches in house 82 in 1906. Chemist A. A. Korotkov worked in house 31 in 1962-67.
