MIKHAYLOVSKAYA STREET (known as Lassalya Street from 1918 to 1940, then called Brodskogo Street until 1991), between Nevsky Prospect and Iskusstv Square. The street, laid in 1834 after the design plan conceived by architect C.I. Rossi, provided the view of Mikhailovsky Palace (hence the name). The second appellation was given as a tribute to the memory of German socialist F. Lassal (1825-64), while the third name was attached to the street in memory of artist I.I. Brodsky. The facades of the houses on either side of the street were designed by Rossi. In 1834-39, the building of the Noble Assembly was built (house No. 2). The corner house No. 2/9 accommodated the best "Polish" eating-house in St. Petersburg in the late 19th century; it was especially popular among students. In 1873-74, the houses standing along the left side of the street (as seen from Nevsky Prospect) were rebuilt to accommodate the Evropeyskaya Hotel (see Evropa). In 1881 the buildings along the right side of the street (as regards to Nevsky Prospect also), as far as the house No. 2, were consolidated into one building, intended for Volga-Kama Commercial Bank (house No. 4; architect G.B. Prang); in 1898 this building was rebuilt (architect L.N. Benois), with the facades restored in the original guise. Before the reconstruction work started in 2002, house No. 4 accommodated various bank facilities (an affiliated branch of Stroibank etc.).
