SHPALERNAYA STREET, from Gagarinskaya Street to Rastrelli Square. The street was known as First Line until 1727, then was called First Beregovaya Street. In the late 18th century it assumed the name Voskresenskaya Street or Voskresenskaya Embankment, after the Cathedral of the Renewal of the Jerusalem Holy Resurrection Temple; in 1857 the section of the street running from present-day Chernyshevskogo Avenue to Tavricheskaya Street (as far as Potemkinskaya Street later on) assumed the name Shpalernaya Street, after the workshops of Espalier Manufactory (the area of house No. 29). In 1887, Ekaterininskaya Street was annexed to Shpalernaya Street. From 1918 to 1991 the street was known as Voinova Street, named so in honour of I.A. Voinov, a member of revolutionary movement (1884-1917). In 1714-20, the Kikin's Chambers were built at the street, as was the Taurida Palace in 1783-89 (house No. 47). The riding-hall of the Cavalry Guards Regiment along with its quarters bearing the statues of Bellona and Mars was built in 1800-06 (houses Nos. 41 and 43, architect L. Rusca; Military Engineering Technical University at present), Our Lady’s Church of Joy for All Who Sorrow was erected in 1817-18 (house No. 35A). From 1859 to the 1900s, the building of the complex of the waterworks with a water tower was conducted (architects I.A. Merz, P.Y. Suzor, V.A. Lipsky); in 1875-77, House of Detention was constructed (house No. 25, engineer K.Y. Maevsky). Several apartment houses were built in the late 19th - early 20th centuries: house No. 5 (1911, architect A.F. Pehl, civil engineers G.G. Zollikofer et al.), house No. 9 (1903-04, architect P.I. Gilev), house No. 18 (Count A.D. Sheremetev's mansion, the 18th century, rebuilt in 1883-86, architects V.G. Turgenev et al.), house No. 44A (1907, architect S.G. Ginger), which housed the Union of Writers from the 1930s to the 1990s. In the 1930s-80s the length of the street stretching from Tavricheskaya Street to Rastrelli Square was replanned and reconstructed. A monument to F.E. Dzerzhinsky was opened in 1981; also, I.A. Voinov's memorial plaque was preserved on house No.1. Among the residents of Shpalernaya Street were writer L.S. Sobolev (house No. 30, 1924-71) and composer M.P. Mussorgsky (house No. 6, 1872-75). Shpalernaya Street also accommodates the NIIgiprokhim Scientific Research and Designing Institute of Chemical Industry (house No. 36), the Archival Committee and the State Central Archives of Arts and Literature of St. Petersburg (house No. 34), the Institute for Banking Professional Support (house No. 24), Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of States of the Commonwealth of Independent States (house No. 47) and Flowers showroom (houses No. 43).
