Chekhova Street

CHEKHOVA STREET, known as Ertelev Lane until 1923, between Zhukovskogo Street and Nekrasova Street. The street was laid in the second half of the 18th century. Its original name was derived from the last name of a house-owner, the chief of the police I.E. Ertel. The street was renamed in memory of writer A.P. Chekhov (1860-1904). The development of the street was conducted at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries and consisted of apartment houses. Among them the following are of note: house No. 3, which belonged to V.F. Kraevsky (1881-82, architect M.I. von Vilken) and house No. 6, the own house of publisher A.S. Suvorin (1888-90, architects V.F. Kharlamov and F.S. Kharlamov), where Chekhov usually stayed during his visits to St. Petersburg. The building No. 13 (1882-83, architect V.G. Shalamov) used to house the printing house of the Novoe Vremya newspaper, which belonged to Suvorin. House No. 10 was once K.K. Nellin's carriage shop (1866, architect V.F. Haecker). House No. 18/7 (1829-30, architect K.A. Ton) currently accommodates the services of Nekrasovsky telephone centre.
