Tchaikovskogo STREET, from Fontanka River Embankment to Potemkinskaya Street. The street was laid in the first half of the 18th century and originally called Second Artilleryskaya Street, sometimes also referred as Second Pushkarskaya Street. It bore the name Sergievskaya Street until 1923, after St. Sergius All Artillery Cathedral (house No. 17, not preserved). The street was eventually renamed in commemoration of P.I. Tchaikovsky. In 1780, the court laundry was built here (house No. 2), while in the first quarter of the 19th century, a notable monument of the classical architecture was built, S.A. Kokoshkin's house (house No. 4). Most of the buildings appeared in the late 19th century - the early 20th century. In 1872-74, Count V.P. Orlov-Davydov's mansion was erected (architect R.A. Gedike), as was Kelch's mansion in the 1890s (house No. 28). The neighbouring house No. 30 used to belong to Prince L.V. Kochubey, then it passed into the hands of manufacturer Y.S. Nechaev-Maltsov (1844-46, architects R.I. Kuzmin and G.A. Bosse; the interiors were designed by architect L.N. Benois in the rococo style ). In 1857-60, E.M. Buturlina's house was built (house No. 10, architect Bosse), which housed the Austro-Hungarian Embassy at the turn of the 19th - 20th centuries. Tchaikovskogo Street was commonly considered as one of the most aristocratic streets of St. Petersburg, a number of mansions belonging to prominent high ranking officials, financiers and political figures: house No. 32 was owned by the Apraxin Counts, house No. 29 belonged to Prince P.N. Trubetskoy, house No. 46-48 was the property of the Baryatinsky Princes, house No. 53 belonged to A.K. Kolman, house No. 33 was owned by Count M.E. Kleinmichel etc. Tchaikovskogo Street also accommodates the Neva Hotel (house No. 17).
