Pestelya Street

PESTELYA STREET known as Panteleimonovskaya Street until 1923, between Fontanka River Embankment and Radishcheva Square. The street was named after P. I. Pestel. It was laid in the early 18th century in the territory of Solyanoy Settlement to be during the laying of settlements for workers of Partikulyarnaya (Civil) Shipyard and Preobrazhensky Life Guard Regiment. St. Panteleimon's Church was constructed in 1735-39 (hence the former name). Most buildings were erected between the mid-to-late 19th century and the early 20th century including the former apartment house of St. Panteleimon's Church built by architect V. F. von Haecker at number 6 in 1876, Archives and Printing Office of the Third Department of His Imperial Majesty's Own Chancellery built by P. S. Sadovnikov at number 9 in 1851-58, A. V. Ratkov-Rozhnov's apartment house built by architect P. Y. Suzor at number 13-15 in 1898-1900, and architect A. H. Pehl's own apartment house built at number 12 in 1847. A commemorative plaque to the defenders of Khanko Peninsula during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 was mounted at number 11.
