Karavannaya Street

KARAVANNAYA STREET (Tolmacheva Street, 1919-91), running between Belinskogo Square and Nevsky Prospect. It was laid in the second half of the 18th century. According to legend the street name originates from the elephants caravan leaders ("karavanshchiki ") who settled on this street after elephants being presented to Empress Elizaveta Petrovna by the Persian Shah. Its second name was given to commemorate revolutionary N.G. Tolmachev (1895-1919). The majority of the buildings along the street were constructed in the second half of the 19th century. Building no. 4 is the former mansion of I.A. Musin-Pushkin (the Panins; 18th century, reconstructed in 1832 by architect A.K. Cavos, in 1841 by architect A.I. Stakensсhneider); building no. 8 is a former apartment house (reconstructed in 1864 by architect N.P. Grebenka); building no. 12 was the Petrograd Credit Society and the Splendid-Palace Cinema (1914-16, architect K.S. Bobrovsky, sculptor A.E. Gromov); building no. 22 is the former mansion of A.F. Lvov (early 19th century, reconstructed in 1841 by architect A.K. Cavos). In 1906-07, building no. 9 housed the Vpered Publishing House and bookshop.
