BOLSHAYA ZELENINA STREET, running from Maly Avenue of Petrogradskaya Side to Admirala Lazareva Embankment. The street was laid in the 1710s as a road leading from the St. Peter and Paul Fortress to the Gun-Powder Works, situated at the meeting of the Karpovka River and the Malaya Neva River. The street was called Bolshaya Zeleynaya Street until 1860 (from the Russian word "zelye," which once meant gunpowder). In 1801, the works were closed, and the street led out of town, to Krestovsky Island. In the late 19th century, a horse-drawn tramway line was installed, replaced by electric tramway lines launched in the 1920s. Starting from the 1890s, the street was built up with stone apartment buildings, including house No. 9 (1911, civil engineer L.Y. Dubnov), house No. 28 (1905, architect F.F. von Postels; the building's facade bears a mosaic panel painted by artist V.A. Frolov), house No. 29 (1912, architect A.L. Lishnevsky), house No. 33 (1903, architect G.G. von Goli), and house No. 43 (the residence of the Kolobov brothers, timber merchants; 1913, architect N.F. Romanchenko). The street's past residents include zoologist A.A. Byalynitsky-Birulya (house No. 9, 1914-33), radiochemist V.G. Khlopin (house No. 9, 1914-30), and sculptor A.L. Auber (house No. 28, the 1910s).
