VOSSTANIYA STREET known as Znamenskaya (Holy Sign) Street until 1923, named after the Holy Sign Church. The street runs between Nevsky Prospect and Kirochnaya Street. The present-day name is in memory of the February Revolution of 1917. The street appeared in the mid-18th century as a link between settlements of Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky Life Guard Regiments. It was built up with apartment houses, mansions, and public buildings in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. House 116/2 built by architect P. I. Gilev in 1900-02 accommodated the Hermitage Hotel. House 8 built by architect R. A. Zhelyazevich in 1845-51 accommodated Pavlovsky Girls' Orphanage. Today, it houses Gymnasium No. 209. House 19, former P. T. Badaev's apartment house, built by architect G. A. Kosyakov assisted by V. A. Kosyakov in 1904-06 is a striking example of Art Nouveau. The house has a rounded corner decorated with a ceramic panel by artist P. K. Vaulin. House 45 is the former I. K. Myasnikov's mansion with a Baroque facade built by architect A. P. Gemilian in 1857-59. Chemical engineer N. N. Kachalov and actress E. I. Time, People's Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, lived in house 6.
