BOTKINSKAYA STREET, from the late 18th century - Ofitserskaya Street, in 1858-98 - Samarskaya Street. It runs from Lenina Square to Voennykh Medikov Square and Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Avenue. The street was laid as far as the present-day Akademika Lebedeva Street in the mid-to-late 18th century up. The first name translated as Officers' Street originating from officer hospital buildings situated in the street. It was renamed after S. P. Botkin in 1898 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Naval Academy. A monument to Botkin sculpted by V. A. Beklemishev in 1908 was erected at 20 Botkinskaya Street. The street was built up in the late 19th century to the early 20th century. House 1, which formerly accommodated workers of Finlyandskaya Railway was built by architects F. F. Mirits and I. I. Gerasimov in 1907-08 with a ceramic panel, Man and Space, painted on the facade by artist V. P. Anopova in 1966; house 13 built by architect A. I. Arens in 1910-12 accommodated G. I. Turner's Orthopaedic Clinic; house 17 built by military engineer G. S. Voynitsky in 1887-92 accommodated a mental hospital that was managed by V. M. Bekhterev from 1893; house 18 built by architect K. Y. Sokolov in 1865-73 accommodated Willie Mikhailovsky Clinical Hospital; and house 23 built by military engineer A. M. Vishnyakov in 1904-08 accommodated an obstetric and gynecologic clinic. All these buildings now house clinics of the Army Medical Academy. Old buildings constructed at 15 Botkinskaya Street in 1930s were demolished to erect residential blocks for the staff of the Army Medical Academy in the early 2000s. Among residents of Botkinskaya Street were surgeons V. A. Oppel and P. A. Kupriyanov who lived in house 20/5 in 1872-1932 and 1944-63, psychiatrist V. P. Osipov in house 17 in 1915-47, paediatrician M. S. Maslov in house 18 in 1921-61, physician and haematologist M. I. Arinkin in house 20 in 1931-48, physician N. Y. Chistovich in house 20 in 1910-28, surgeon S. S. Girgolav in house 23 in 1937-57, and Member of Academy I. S. Kolesnikov in house 23 in 1933-85. The street was extended to Lenina Square in 1950s. An entrance to Ploshchad Lenina metro station was opened in 1962. A monument to military physicians by architect Y. K. Mityurev and sculptor B. A. Petrov was placed on Voennykh Medikov Square in 1996.
