Bolotnaya Street

BOLOTNAYA STREET, translated as Swamp Street, between Toreza Avenue and Novorossiiskaya Street. It appeared in swampy area (hence the name) in the early-to-mid 19th century. It was built up with dachas from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. House 13, owned by merchant Bertling, accommodated Lesnovsko-Udelninskaya District Duma with M. I. Kalinin as chair. On 16 (29) October 1917, the Central Committee of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party (of Bolsheviks) with Lenin at the head held an extended meeting here and made a decision to organise an armed revolt. The house accommodated a branch of the Museum of the October Revolution from 1962, the Memorial Revolution History Museum of Vyborgskaya Side in 1973-98. Today, it houses the Children's Centre for Historical Education. The street was built up with multi-storied residential houses in 1960-70s, gardens and ponds were retained.
