BARMALEEVA STREET situated in Petrogradskaya part between Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street and Chkalovsky Avenue. It was laid in the settlement of St. Petersburg Regiment in 1730s and named after landowner Major Stepan Barmaleev in the late 18th century. The street gave its name to Barmaley, a character of K. I. Chukovsky's fantasy. Modern houses were mainly built between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Sculptors V. I. Demut-Malinovsky and F. F. Shchedrin had their dachas at about 23 Barmaleeva Street. P. N. Stolpyansky, a historian who studied St. Petersburg, lived in house 31 in 1910-12.
