TSYLOV Nikolay Ivanovich (1799, Peterhof - 1879, St. Petersburg) cartographer and topographer, Major-General (1860). Tsylov graduated from the First Cadets Corps in St. Petersburg in 1817. Served in the Caucasus in 1817-20. Taught mathematics at the Artillery College from 1824. Tsylov served with the St. Petersburg Police Force from 1840, and was also counted as part of the artillery. Tsylov was the Chief of Police of the Liteinaya District (1840-53) and Tsarskoe Selo (1853-60). Compiled and published the book-atlas Description of the Streets of Liteinaya District (1846). The book was highly appreciated by specialists. Emperor Nicholas I ordered from Tsylov a detailed atlas of the streets of St. Petersburg (1849), a book called The Atlas of the Thirteen Parts of the Capital. He published Atlas of Tsarskoe Selo with Plans of the Town, Imperial Gardens, and Parks (1858). In 1863, he compiled Description of the Streets of St. Petersburg and Families of its House Owners. Tsylov's publications are valuable sources for the topographical study of St. Petersburg. Tsylov was a member of the Russian Geographical Society from 1850. He was buried at the Novodevichye Cemetery.
