SVINYIN Pavel Petrovich (1787-1839), writer, journalist, collector, honorary associate of the Academy of Arts (1827), member of the Russian Academy (1833) received his primary education at the Boarding School for Nobility affiliated to the Moscow University and later carried on his studies at the Academy of Arts. In 1805-24 served at the Department of Foreign Affairs. In the 1810s Svinyin was involved with the Petersburg Peter towards the Truth Masonic Lodge. It was Svinyin who in 1818-30 founded and published the journal Otechestvennye Zapiski. He also gave a description of a number of monuments and buildings in St. Petersburg and the vicinities in his book Sights of St. Petersburg and its Vicinities (parts 1-6, 1816-28; revised edition released in 1997). He was granted the title of an honorary member of the Free Society for Friends of Russian Philology (1816), and the full member of the Society of Philology, Sciences and Arts Friends (1819). His antiquity and art collection gave birth to the first private public museum - the Russian Museum (accommodated in Svinyin's flat at 9 Inzhenernaya Street; sold in 1834). From 1834 he lived in his estate at Kostroma.
