GEORGI Ivan Ivanovich (Johann Gottlieb) (1729-1802, St. Petersburg), traveller, ethnographer, naturalist, Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1783). Native of Germany, became a Collegiate Counsellor in 1799. Studied medicine at Uppsala University in Sweden. Invited to Russia in 1770 to participate in the Second Academic Expedition (1768-74, under the guidance of P. Pallas). He studied the Siberian Volga Region. Georgi lived and worked in St. Petersburg from 1774. He wrote Description of All the Nations Inhabiting the Russian Country (chapters 1-4, 1776-80, in German; Russian translation - parts 1-3, 1776-77; both published in 1799). There, for the first time, he compiled and systematised data about the history and culture of Russian nations. He described in detail the capital's demographic situation and its economic and cultural life at the end of the 18th century in the book Description of the Russian Imperial City of St. Petersburg and a Survey of Its Outskirts (in German, Riga, 1790; Russian translation, St. Petersburg, 1794; recent edition, St. Petersburg, 1996, introduction by Y. M. Piryutko). A variety of flower imported from America was named Georgina by botanist K. Wilden in memory of Georgi in 1804.
