CASINOS (from Italian casino - house), a kind of gambling-house. In the Russian Empire and USSR gambling-houses and casinos were officially banned. The first legal casinos appeared in St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 1990s (in 2002 there were 30 of them). The largest ones are Slava (in the premises of the former Slava Cinema, 47 Bukharestskaya Street), Captain Morgan (30 Bolshoy Avenue, Petrogradskaya Side), Premier (in the premises of the former Titan Cinema, 47 Nevsky Prospect) and others. Seven Petersburg Clubs belong to one franchise Conti Group: Conti (in the premises of the former Gigant Cinema, 44 Kondratyevsky Avenue), Olympia (14 Liteiny Avenue), Astoria (24 Malaya Morskaya Street), Indiana (66/1 Grazhdansky Avenue), Palas (in the premises of the former Velikan Cinema, 4 Alexandrovsky Garden), Bada-Boom (113 Engelsa Avenue), Neva-da (2 Klochkov Lane). A regular Petersburg Casino is a club with a restaurant, gambling and concert halls. In gambling halls people play card games (preference, poker, debertz and others); American roulette, keno, and slot machines are also available. In some casinos tournaments on intellectual card games are held. Conti Group also organizes various sports events and tournaments (including International ones) for tennis, boxing, kickboxing and others, and possesses recreation departments in luxury parts of the city. Children’s performances and New Year’s parties are held in the concert halls of its clubs (Gigant Hall, Astoria, Palas) concerts.
