ATHLETIC CLUBS are public or private organisations, for both amateur and professional athletes. The first athletic clubs appeared in Russia in the middle of the 19th century and united a few enthusiastic amateurs. In the USSR, athletic clubs were established in the 1920-30s and became a part of voluntary sport societies. Athletic clubs organised athletic schools, children’s sections and teams, and fitness centres. The system of the Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, the Air Force and the Navy (from 1991 RDSTO - Russian Defence Sport Technical Organisation) organised its own sports and technical clubs. Usually athletic clubs have their own athletic and technical base for training activities and competitions, a name, an emblem and uniform. By 2002 there were athletic clubs (Progress; 31/1Bukharestskaya Street; Atletichesky Club, 25 Tverskaya Street, Kolpino, etc.), Aerobics Clubs (Sargon, 14 Rossiisky Avenue; Fitness Class, 1 Tchaikovsky Street, etc.), mountaineering clubs (Politekh, 27 Politekhnicheskaya Street), badminton, pool clubs (Arsenal, 6 Morskoy Pekhoty Street, etc.), bodybuilding clubs (The Ben Weider Bodybuilding College, 7 Kantemirovskaya Street), boxing clubs (St. Petersburg, 30 Alpiisky Lane), tennis clubs (6 Soyuza Pechatnikov Street, Kolomna), freestyle wrestling clubs (Zevs, 11 Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue), cycling, martial arts, and other clubs, as well as professional athletic club professional teams (Zenit, etc.).
