CENTRAL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF RADIOLOGY AND NUCLEAR MEDICINE (70/4 Leningradskaya Street, village of Pesochny) was established in 1918 as a medico-biological department of the State Institute of X-ray Technology and Radiology. It was established in the building of the Alexander II Memorial Hospital of the Charitable Society of Adherents of Homoeopathy of St. Petersburg on the initiative of M. I. Nemenov, today 8 Rontgen Street. In 1920, it was transformed into the Central Institute of X-ray Technology, Radiology and Oncology (M. I. Nemenov was a director in 1920-50). A temporary monument to V. K. Rontgen was installed in front of the building in 1920 (sculptor N. I. Altman), later it was replaced with а permanent monument (1929, sculptor V. A. Sinaisky). The first gynaecological clinic for treating cancerous growths was established as part of the Institute of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine in 1928. The institute was evacuated to Samarkand in 1941-44. A scientific town was constructed for the institute in the village of Pesochny in 1965-71. New scientific schools were founded at the institute (radio-biology, radiation genetics and biochemistry, experimental oncology, radiotherapy), techniques for radio diagnostics and therapy are developed in the institute.
