NORTH WESTERN DEPARTMENT OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES situated at 12 Akademika Pavlova Street. It was established in 1998 on the basis of the St. Petersburg Bureau of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Northern Scientific Centre, Arkhangelsk, both operating from 1994. The decision to establish the department was made by the General Assembly of the academy. The North Western Department is a regional agency engaged in coordinating research work, developing practical actions for improving the health of the population of north-western Russia, and training medical and scientific personnel. It has been publishing its Medical Academic Journal since 2001.
