MECHNIKOV MEDICAL ACADEMY, St. Petersburg State Medical Academy situated at 47 Piskarevsky Avenue. It originates from the Psychoneurological Institute with a faculty of medicine reorganised into the State Institute of Medical Knowledge in 1920 and renamed the Second Leningrad Medical Institute in 1930. Apart from the department of preventative medicine and treatment, a department of sanitation was opened in the institute, which was one of the first in the country with its first specialists graduating in 1934. The institute was united with Mechnikov Medical Institute and Hospital in 1936. The curriculum was changed during World War II to provide training for army doctors with a sorting evacuation hospital established as part of the institute. Reorganised as the Leningrad Medical Institute of Sanitation in 1947, the institute was renamed as the Medical Academy in 1994 and named after I. I. Mechnikov in 1995. There are the following departments: therapy, treatment and prevention, advanced nurse training, teachers' training and upgrading and advanced medical training. There is the Minor Schoolchildren's Department of Medicine attached to the academy. The academy also has Peter the Great Hospital as its main clinical base. Most buildings were constructed with facades in the style of the Petrine Baroque by architects L. A. Ilyin, A. I. Klein, and A. V. Rosenberg in 1907-17. There is a monument to Mechnikov sculpted by V. A. Shervud in 1936 and a monument to students and members who fell during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45 erected by architect Y. N. Lukin and sculptor N. A. Aliev in 1985 on the territory of academy. References: Санкт-Петербургской государственной медицинской академии им. И. И. Мечникова 90 лет. СПб., 1997. T. I. Grekova.
