HOSPICES, institutions which render qualified comprehensive medical, psychological, and nursing care to terminal oncological patients. The House of Mercy for Women With Cancer, which opened in St. Petersburg at the end of the 19th century (65, Sixteenth Line, Vasilievsky Island) can be regarded as a prototype of the future hospices. The first hospice was opened in 1990 on the initiative of English journalist V. Zorz in the building of the former hospital and ambulance station for the poor (98 Lakhtinsky Avenue; the building was erected in 1903 on the land belonging to the Countess N.A. Stenbock-Fermor). The Community of Sisters of Mercy Dedicated to the St. Princess Elizaveta Fedorovna was based at the hospice. There are hospices also in Kolpino and Pargolovo, hospices also exist in hospitals No.14, and No. 20, the Emergency Care Hospital No. 36 (the first in Russia) and the City Geriatric Centre.
