HOSPITALS, MILITARY. The first Admiralty hospital was set up by order of Tsar Peter the Great on Vyborgskaya Side in 1715. In 1717, the Land military hospital was opened, which together with the Admiralty hospital formed a single ensemble (the 1720s, architect D. Trezzini). In 1788 hospitals were called "general" and hospital schools were attached to them, which were transformed into medical surgical colleges in 1786. On their basis the Medical Surgical Academy was founded (MCA) (see Military Medical Academy). In 1735 the "General statement concerning Hospitals" was adopted. In 1836, the building of the Admiralty hospital was given to the Land hospital which was included into the Medical Surgical Academy as the Clinical Military Hospital and the Admiralty Hospital itself was transferred to the embankment of the Fontanka River to Kalinkin Bridge (now the First Military Naval Clinical Hospital). On the facade of the main building (2 Staropeterhofsky Avenue) one can see memorial plaques with the date of the hospital’s foundation and with the words Peter the Great said on the occasion of the foundation. On the memorial plaque in the vestibule there are the names of outstanding doctors who worked in the hospital. On the territory of the hospital, the monument to Baltic sailors who perished in the course of the Great Patriotic War was installed in 1975. In 1717, the Admiralty Hospital in Kronstadt was set up which is now the 35th Lenin Military Naval Hospital (named in 1923 in honour of N.А. Semashko). On the memorial plaque one can see the names of outstanding doctors who had worked at the hospital. There is a monument to V.I. Isaev in the park of the hospital. In 1840 the Military Army Hospital was opened near Smolny Convent [from 1869 St. Petersburg Nikolaevsky Military Hospital, now the 442nd District Military Clinical Hospital in honour of Z.P. Solovyev (a memorial plaque was installed in 1923)]. In the main building one can see the memorial plaque with the date of the foundation (63 Suvorovsky Avenue). In 1876-82 medical courses for women were attached to the hospital. Many outstanding doctors worked at the hospital, among them P.А. Kupriyanov. The Veterans’ Hospital (21 Narodnaya Street) was founded in 1946 as was the Hospital for the Treatment of Invalids of the Great Patriotic War (known under its present-day name from 1993). It was housed in a wing of the former Catherine Institute (36 Fontanka Embankment). In 1950 it was transferred to the right bank of the Neva. In 1960-90 reconstruction was undertaken and new wings were added. Several other institutions in St. Petersburg have their own hospitals.
