PHARMACIES, institutions making and distributing medications. The first official drugstore was opened in 1704 in Peter and Paul Fortress; in 1734 it was transferred to the building of the Medical Office at the corner of Millionnaya Street and a lane, which was later named Aptekarsky (Pharmacy) Lane. "Voluntary" (private) pharmacies appeared in St. Petersburg in 1721. In 1789 regulations including rights and responsibilities of Pharmacies were issued. By the end of the 19th century besides hospital drugstores there were 64 open pharmacies. The first municipal pharmacy was set up in 1909. In 1918 all pharmacies were nationalised. In 2002 there were about 600 drugstores in St. Petersburg, including 140 state pharmacies. In the building of one of the largest pre-revolutionary pharmacies Pehl and Sons (16/18, Seventh Line of Vasilievsky Island) the Museum of Pharmaceutical History was established in 1983.
